Bob Katz - Mastering Audio Tertiary Edition

So I accept been mixing audio for a little while now and take never actually ventured into the mastering side of things. I'm prepare to learn nigh mastering over the summer and I've been recommended the book "Bob Katz - Mastering Audio" to learn from. (I know very little about mastering at the moment other than it'southward used to make tracks louder)

I notice however on Amazon there is a third edition coming out at the cease of the year (October 15th) - Bob Katz - Mastering Sound

Now I'm wondering if anyone knows how credible this release date is? (or how different the books content will be?) I'yard l/50 whether to wait until this new version releases then learn about mastering, or just to commencement learning now from the 2nd edition.

Advice?

I carmine offset and second edition probably 5 times lol. Second edition got more chapters etc only all books "meat" remains the same. If I was you lot I wouldn't wait and simply get two nd edition. I've noticed quite a few mastering books are coming out. I recently bought 'practical mastering' book that is good starting indicate for people new at it. Katz volume is pretty technical and I love information technology, I wish there were more books like Katz one.

I've read the 1st & 2nd editions. They are like only some things take changed, similar some digital engineering science passing out of employ (such equally Exabyte). I'k certain iTunes will be a huge part of the new edition, since that's the mainstream instead of CDs at present. Believe me, iTunes is a chip of a dissimilar ball game from CDs.

Although Bob mentioned a third edition on the SquareCad podcast terminal year, when I asked him on his ain forum recently, he said that it would be a while off. I've read first and second editions multiple times too, and would agree only catch the 2d edition now. There have been a slew of new mastering books published recently, or coming pretty before long, in one case I've absorbed them all I intend to write a review comparison and contrasting each of them.

Haha! No way, from what I've seen from some of the newer ones, there are already a few too many people without the kind of industry feel or client list I'd really want to encounter, to exist able to truly trust an author of a book telling you "How to Principal!" Only been in this game myself since 2009, then perhaps in xx five years fourth dimension!

I have that book in Spanish. Though the translation is not very good, information technology is a great reading

.....dont past from amazon..... ;-)

I feel that the Katz book could do good from editing and abridging. Probably get stoned for such a comment round here though...

My re-create was just sent. Like I said, gonna get four or v together and do a mass review afterwards in the year.

The Third Edition is out. Focal Press: Mastering Audio: The Fine art and the Science, 3rd Edition (Paperback)

I never bought the 1st one, but have the second one. Much comeback over the 1st with the writing mode and boosted info.

Completely reorganized to focus on workflow, this third edition details mastering past providing a step-by-step approach to the process. First covering applied techniques and basic theory, this industry classicalso addresses avant-garde theory and practice. The book's new approach is especially suitable to accompany a i- or two-term course in audio and mastering.

I read one of Bob's books some years back when I was learning to master. Information technology was a complete waste of time ...as are the rest of the books out there. If you haven't learned by at present, all mastering books talk effectually the subject field only non virtually it. You just won't walk out knowing how to master subsequently reading the books that are out at that place.

In the mod solar day, there are some really adept YouTube videos on the subject. I personally learned a lot from them. Useful ones are far and few between but yous tin can really hit some gems.

Another way to learn mastering is to see if an engineer volition give you a hands-on training session. The experience would be invaluable and would trim out all the double talk crap.

I'g non trying to be rude or go against the grain, just in my opinion yous should start of on what I believe is to be the right runway. ...Wish I would have years agone.

I've never opened 1 of his books and don't intend to.
He doesn't seem to even accept a real mastering studio.
I'one thousand sure he's tech knowledgeable and talks a good game.

A legend in his own heed.

Some posters need to practice their homework. Every bit for whether ane tin learn from books, information technology depends on your personality. If yous're analytical and methodical, books are superb. If you lot're more of an intuitive learner, perhaps not. I'yard firmly in the sometime camp and actually enjoying the tertiary edition. My 2nd ed. shows battle scars.

I agree with you 100 pct!

Merely because Bob has mastered three Grammy Award-winning albums and one nominated album, received acclamation from audiophiles and wrote a volume that was revised 3 times on masterinfg actually means zero. Oh yeah he too developed a proprietary systems Yard-Stereo and Thou-Surround. These processes are designed to "recover lost or amplify hidden ambience, infinite and imaging, and generate stereo from mono signals without adding artificial reverberation.

He also taught at the Institute of Sound Inquiry and In 1988, joined Chesky Records and began recording jazz and classical artists there, likewise as producing oversampled commercial recordings. In 1990, he founded an audio mastering visitor called Digital Domain Mastering, where he continues to work.

He don't actually know what his doing. ????

I have met Bob and talked with him near mastering. He is one of the most humble guys I have met past the way. He never blows his own horn, other summit engineers practice it for him.

I had no idea.
I saw him give a lecture on compression at the AES convention once and it was unbearable.
The K Metering System is fable.
My apologies to anyone I may take offended.

I don't concur with everything he says either, but he's a legend, I've bought each edition as information technology has come out and take learned an innumerable amount of fantastic info from them all. By the fashion, in the new edition he says the G-Organisation for metering is done/over/finished with/replaced by the new ITU/EBU standards. Information technology takes a strong character with integrity to admit when something comes along to supersede something they spent many years working on and championing. I love Bob. There was a great interview with him on Adam Gonzalves' SquareCad mastering podcast, well worth a listen!
